The Chaffinch

This is the most common species of finch throughout the UK and is also very easily identifiable. Male chaffinches are among the most beautiful of our garden birds. Throughout the breeding period the adult male's plumage will become a lot more vibrant, whilst throughout the winter season they fade even though their markings continue to be really noticeable. The cheeks, as well as lower body of the chaffinch tend to be pink-red in colour. Typically the head and back of the chaffinch's neck are a buff-reddish but become slate-blue throughout the breeding season.

Female and immature chaffinches are much less colourful, with comparable patterning

however, picked out in shades of brown with a buff under-body and brown-grey upperparts. The wings of both sexes are darkish with white-coloured bars      Chaffinches possess a loud, crystal clear call along with diverse notes as well as regional differences in dialect. All of our finches are fervent seed feeders, and a Chaffinch could eat what seems to be their own weight in seed, granted the opportunity.  Unperturbed by people they are really very happy to sit on a bird table or in a bird feeder, attentively searching for their particular favourite type of seed.
